Council Awards and Recognition

Nominations for Council Awards open on October 1st and close 11:59pm on November 16th.

Awards and recognition will be at the Annual Volunteer Dinner this February

2025 Nomination Form

Council Duty to God Award
The Council Duty to God Award was created to recognize registered Scouters who have demonstrated an exemplary history of transformational leadership in supporting and promoting the spiritual foundation of Scouting at the local Council level.

It acknowledges the unswerving dedication to faith, fellowship, and service of those whose character embodies the moral principles and shared ideals of Scouting America. The award distinguishes Scouters who selflessly work to prepare youth for life by perpetuating the merit and legacy of a Scout’s duty to their Creator.

Nominations are open to candidates from all faiths and religious groups.

Nominees should have five or more years of volunteer or professional leadership with service to Scouting at the Council and/or territorial level or other organizations or institutions, and the nominee's respective faith tradition.

Nominees should have received the faith-appropriate adult religious recognition from the nominee’s religious organization prior to this nomination, or adult religious recognition from another religious organization whose youth the candidate has served.

Nominees should have demonstrated an outstanding record of transformational, spiritual, moral, and ethical leadership, and edifying service within the community and Council in the advancement and promotion of a Scout’s duty to God and shared values, regardless of faith tradition.
Distinguished Service to Safety Award
The Distinguished Service to Safety Award is a Narragansett Council–specific honor presented to an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the safety and well-being of our members. This award recognizes those who have gone above and beyond in promoting a culture of safety, implementing effective practices, and ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
George Meany Award
The George Meany Award is presented to union members who have made a significant and positive impact on youth in their communities through dedicated volunteer service in the programs of Scouting America. This award recognizes individuals who exemplify the values of both organized labor and Scouting by giving generously of their time and talents to support youth development, leadership, and community engagement.

Although a nominee’s length of service in Scouting may be considered, no specific number of years should be required. A person’s record of accomplishment and dedication should weigh more heavily than longevity.

This recognition highlights efforts to promote the American Labor merit badge, recruit youth and union members into Scouting, form union-sponsored units, and strengthen ties between Scouting and the labor movement. It also honors those who lead by example, support inclusive Scouting for all youth, and contribute meaningfully to labor relations within the Scouting community.

The North Star Award often considered the equivalent of the Silver Beaver, honors individuals who have provided exceptional support to Scouting within the council, throughout the community, and across the region. What makes this recognition especially meaningful is that recipients are not currently registered members of Scouting America. Their remarkable service and dedication, offered without formal affiliation, exemplify a deep commitment to youth and the values of Scouting.

Please furnish as much information as possible as to why the nominee should be recognized. For example, owner of the company who donated land for a new service center or high adventure camp; doctor who has provided free physicals for Scouts for years and provides medical support for summer camp and camporees; president of the law firm that provides free legal services for the council; or, superintendent of schools who supports the council.

Nomination cannot be for posthumous awards.

This award is not to be used to supplement or replace the Silver Beaver Award. It is to recognize non-Scouters whereas the Silver Beaver recognizes registered Scouters.
Silver Beaver Award
The Silver Beaver Award was introduced in 1931 and is a council?level distinguished service award of Scouting of America.  Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council.

Long-established policy limits the award of the Silver Beaver to adults 21 and older who are registered with the Boy Scouts of America as volunteer Scouters.

Nominations will not be considered for current or former professional Scouters within five (5) years of their leaving employment with the BSA. Other council employees (part time or full time) are eligible to receive the Silver Beaver Award based on their volunteer service, not employed service.

Nominations cannot be considered for posthumous awards
Torch of Gold Award
The Torch of Gold Award recognizes individuals who have provided outstanding service and support to Scouts with special needs. This honor celebrates those who demonstrate exceptional dedication, compassion, and advocacy ensuring that every Scout, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive and fully participate in the Scouting experience.
Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award
The Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award recognizes outstanding service by an adult individual or organization that has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing and implementing Scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low-income urban backgrounds. This award honors those who help ensure that Scouting is accessible, inclusive, and impactful for all young people especially those who face barriers to participation.

Nominations may be submitted to the committee, by committee members, professional staff, or any other registered Scouter.

The award should not be presented posthumously.
William H. Spurgeon Award
The William H. Spurgeon III Award is the highest recognition for individuals and organizations supporting the Exploring program. It is presented to adult Exploring leaders, businesses, and community organizations at both the local and national levels who have demonstrated exceptional service, leadership, and commitment to the growth and success of Exploring. Their contributions help create meaningful career exploration experiences for youth and strengthen partnerships between Scouting and the broader community.

The council may present the Spurgeon Award to schools, businesses, industries, labor unions, governmental agencies, civic clubs, fraternal groups, and other community organizations that have demonstrated an outstanding record of providing significant leadership to the Exploring program.
