Leave No Trace Trainer Course

Yawgoog Scout Reservation

 

 

Who  – Scouts, BSA over 14 years of age, Venturers, Adults and/or Youth, Venturing Advisors, Associate Venturing Advisors, Unit Commissioners, and other adult leaders.   

What - The basic training course for individuals who want to become Outdoor Ethics Trainers.

The Leave No Trace Trainer discussing the sustainable elements of camping following the principles of Leave No Trace in a day and half, with overnight camping required as part of the course.  All course materials will be supplied in the fee.

         Why - Learn the basics of Leave No Trace and Outdoor Ethics and the methods of teaching the course materials for troops, packs (age appropriate materials), or crews.  These hands on exercises will help you understand the 7 principles and how they apply to your hiking, backpacking and camping plans year round, and how best to take care of the land we use to leave it better than we found it.

Check In Located at the Bucklin Memorial Room on the 2nd floor of the Bucklin Building 

Parking Instructions: Bucklin Memorial Room at Camp Yawgoog, 61 Camp Yawgoog Road, Rockville, RI.  When you enter the driveway to camp, take your left into the gravel parking lot.  Look onto the grass area to the right and you will see the Bucklin Building, our class is on the second floor in the Memorial Room.

When - Saturday, September 18th - Sunday September 19th

         Time Program Begins - 9 AM on Saturday    Ends 11 AM on Sunday morning

Check In/ Registration - Start time: 8:30 AM     End time: 9:00 AM

The first session will be begin at 9 AM in the Bucklin Memorial room. 

How - Register online today!

All program materials will be provided as part of your course fee.

 You will be bring your own lunch, and can either bring special food to cook, or purchase the backpacking meals for dinner and breakfast. 

Dress is casual, activity uniform please dress weather appropriate.

Bring a tent, sleeping bags, and eating utensils. You will bring lunch with you.  Backpacking meals will be available for purchase for dinner and breakfast.  We will cook on backpacking stoves.  Drinking water is available on the property.

     

Overnight camping is part of the course

This course is for everyone age 14 & older who will teach Leave No Trace to others. Leave No Trace is integrated into every Scouting Program, every Pack, Troop, Team, Crew, and Ship should have a LNT Trainer. The course is highly recommended for members of the Districts' outdoor skills training teams who teach IOLS, BALOO, OWLS, and Leader Specific Training. Scouts holding the Outdoor Ethics Guide position of responsibility learn the skills they need to be successful in their job through participating in this course.  

Participants learn LNT principles, skills, and ethics through a combination of presentation, discussion, and hands-on activities.  They learn and practice techniques for teaching these concepts.   

Those completing the course will be BSA Leave No Trace Trainers, recognized by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Completing the course prepares you to:  

  • Understand, demonstrate, and teach minimum impact techniques to friends, family, scouting groups, and other community groups. 
  • Teach the BSA Leave No Trace 101 Awareness class, BSA Outdoor Ethics Orientation Course, Leave No Trace sessions in Scout Training, Leave No Trace Awareness workshops, and lead LNT activities at Scouting events.
  • Better understand outdoor ethics concepts presented in Outdoor leader training and Leader Specific Training
  • Lead discussions on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic.
  • Better understand and teach 44 of the 2020 Trail to 1st Class requirements (34%)

 

Course Cost:  $40.00   (Includes camping fees, council fees, AND over $65 worth of LNT program materials at commercial price.  Participants will be split into patrols and responsible for planning, purchasing, and cooking their own patrol meals).

What is the purpose of this class?

The Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, and Sea Scout programs all include outdoor stewardship, care for the environment, and Leave No Trace as part of their programs. This course is offered to train adults and youth aged 14 to serve their units and districts as Leave No Trace Trainers and as Outdoor Ethics Guides. Every Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, and Sea Scout unit should have at least one Leave No Trace/Outdoor Ethics Trainer. We recommend that Boy Scouts complete this course before serving in the troop Outdoor Ethics Guide position.  The course is highly recommended for members of the Districts' outdoor skills training teams who teach IOLS, BALOO, OWLS, and Leader Specific Training.

Who should attend?

Venturers, Sea Scouts, and Scouts BSA aged 14 and older; adult Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing, and Sea Scout leaders; and District and Council leaders and trainers.

What will I learn?

This course is designed to enhance your understanding of Leave No Trace practices and outdoor ethics and increase your level of confidence teaching Leave No Trace skills and ethics.  You will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of recreational impacts and Leave No Trace ethics in developed areas and high adventure back country environments. 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be registered as Leave No Trace Trainers with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and with the BSA. Students will receive Leave No Trace teaching materials, a certificate of course completion, a Leave No Trace Trainer patch, and a BSA Leave No Trace Trainer card.

This course is instructed by nationally designated Leave No Trace Master Educators and Trainers. Attendance for the entire duration of the training is required
