Traffic Safety Merit Badge (Virtual)

WHAT: Earning the Traffic Safety merit badge will give Scouts some crucial tools to stay safer when driving a car on a highway, riding a bike across town, or jogging across a busy street. Scouts will learn about the importance of car maintenance, the dangers of impaired driving and distractions and the lifesaving importance of seatbelt use.

Meet your Counselor: Barbara is a Traffic Safety Specialist, where she focuses primarily on teen drivers. Barbara develops and conducts driver training safety presentations for high schools, businesses, community groups and public libraries on such topics as handling driving emergencies, distracted driving, and senior driving and pedestrian safety. Barbara attends health/safety fairs and community events to promote Public Affairs and AAA’s programs. Barbara is a CarFit Event Coordinator and a NYS DMV approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program certified Lead Instructor.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

This class is recommended for Scouts who are 14 years old or older who are currently driving or will be in the next 2 years.

HOW: This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 20 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation ! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over one session:

August 12, 2020 12:00PM-2:00PM EST.

Scouts must attend the full session to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES: This class is recommended for Scouts who are 14 years old or older who are currently driving or will be in the next 2 years.
