Virtual Art Merit Badge

What: Explore RISD museum virtually, discuss the elements of art and design and different potential art professions and the education, training, and experience required for this profession. Each Scout will design a logo and complete four renderings of a simple still life (see req. 4).

Meet your Counselor - Mike Eaton has spent the past 20-some-odd years striving to be visually clever as either a designer or art director (sometimes both!). In that time, he has worked for such clients as Bank of America, New Balance, Stride Rite, Reebok, Sprint, Aflac, and Staples. His work has been featured in Print, Graphic Design: USA and HOW Magazines, The Best of Business Card Design 8, Logo and Letterhead Design 9 and the Logo Lounge series. He has won awards from AIGA, CADC, Hatch and the Business Marketing Association and will brag about it to anyone willing to listen. He works at Digitas in Boston and lives in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts with his wife, twin children and a cat named Stormy. He enjoys eating donuts and complaining. He is an Eagle Scout (class of 1991) and former Den Leader and Cubmaster for Pack 53 Mattapoisett.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  The ART Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 15 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

August 8, 2020 12:00PM-2:00PM EST

August 15, 2020 12:00PM-2:00PM EST

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  Req. 7 - To be discussed in the first session.

Other Details: Homework: 4, 5c, 6 (https://risdmuseum.org/exhibitions-events/exhibitions/modern-and-contemporary-galleries ) To be shared/discussed in the second session.
